It depends on how many pages, color or black pocketbook color white, type of paper. Modern paperbacks are a pocketbook color wider and taller, and trade paperbacks are edging them into a smaller share of the market.
Any smaller, and there aren't enough words on a page at 11 pocketbook color 12 point leaded enough to be readable. Pocketbook color have a handsome book on my shelf that is 5. It is easy to read -- but it's not print-on-demand! Remember you're competing with trade paperbacks, which are just softcover versions of the hardcover book.
Production cost is based on the number of pages. Three bits of advice: 1 Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition, and don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. There are other fish in the sea, even if Amazon is the largest.
If your book is long, go with 6 x 9, which is a fairly large size much bigger and it looks weird--try measuring some traditionally published paperbacks on your own shelves. Production cost is more keyed to pages than trim. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly. the spinner racks we used to see in drug stores and newsstands are now antiques. So a longer book published at a larger trim size may even have a smaller production cost than a shorter book published at a tiny trim size, because the latter may have more pages. And I use CreateSpace, of course, not this buggy KDP Print Beta.
